It is important to have your teeth professionally cleaned at least twice a year. The bacteria that live around the gumline use the minerals in your saliva to create calcified homes for themselves. As this calcium builds up and the bacteria bunker in, it causes inflammation of the gums. This inflammation (swelling) increases the depth of the gums and the bacteria in the deepest areas become damaging to the bone. This is gum disease.

Even the best flossers tend to miss spots, and the tartar starts to build up.

During these interesting times, Hudson Bend Dental and Orthodontics will only use hand cleaning to give you an easy cleaning. Ultrasonic removal of tartar is not currently allowed due to the aerosols that it produces. If it has been a while since your last cleaning, you might need two cleanings to catch up. We generally separate these two cleanings by a month so that we can see how you're doing with your home care.

If your gums are already infected with gum disease, you should have more advanced "deep" cleanings done with local anesthetic. These cleanings can take a while and you will be numb, so we only clean half the mouth at a time. Once the entire mouth is "deep cleaned", we will schedule you every 3 months for your routine cleanings. It is important not to fall behind with these cleanings or the "deep cleanings" may have to be repeated.

Everything in your mouth drains into your body.

There is truth to that saying. Gum disease has been linked to all kinds of systemic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, erectile dysfunction, and even Alheimer's. There is no cure for gum disease, and it can be difficult to control. There are health risks, such as diabetes and smoking, that make control even more difficult. We will work with you to help you keep your teeth for your lifetime.
